Scoring Quizzes and Pass/Fail thresholds

Modified on Wed, Nov 29, 2023 at 9:43 AM

The threshold for what equals pass/false, etc. lives at the GradeBook level for a course.    In other words,  the quiz itself tells how it is scored (aka: each question is weighted to count towards the overall  "x" percent).  But the Course is what determines what that value is in terms of pass/fail.   The reason: a quiz on 1 course can be worth 10% of the total, and must receive an 80% to be considered pass.    The same quiz on a 2nd course can be worth 100% of the total, and must receive a 90% to pass.  That indication is specific to the course, therefore is configured on the Course > Grade Book.

To set your pass/fail grading criteria:

  1. Go to your Course > edit the Grade Book section > click on the 'Score Configuration' tab.
  2. Select the Grading Criterion you wish to use (or change for a different one if there is already a selection)
Your quiz must be part of the grade book to receive pass/fail (otherwise the learner just receives a percent, no pass/fail indicator).
To add your quiz to your grade book:

  1. Add your first Category  (call it whatever you want, its just a grouping)
  2. On the far right, click the "+" to add your quiz
  3. Indicate if they "Must Pass" to proceed.  (if set, they cannot move past that quiz until it is passed.   If set to "no" they can move on with the course... even though they may fail the course because of their score)
